My first precious stone

Would you like to know a little more about what the jewellery world calls "its precious stones"? This article is for you! On the occasion of our first anniversary, we pay tribute to them: the Diamond, the Sapphire, the Ruby and the Emerald. Not to be confused with the fine stones (amethyst, aquamarine, garnet...) the name "precious stones" is reserved for these 4 gems which are the rarest and most prized.

The emerald

Emerald belongs to the beryl family and is green in colour. This stone with a crystalline structure can have many inclusions called "emerald gardens".

The world's largest emerald has been discovered in Brazil. The "Bahia" emerald weighs 180,000 carats. The main deposits are in Brazil, Colombia, Madagascar, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. The most sought-after emeralds are found in the Muzo mine in Colombia.

The emerald is the symbol of happiness, hope and loyalty.

The Sapphire and Ruby

They are two stones of the same family, both corundum. Red for the ruby and blue for the sapphire.

The world's largest ruby, weighing 1700 carats, was discovered in Burma. It is called the "King of Mogok". The main deposits are in Burma, Sri Lanka and Thailand, and they are also found in Africa and Australia. The ruby symbolises love, courage, struggle, life force, youth and pleasure.

The largest sapphire, also known as the 'Star of India', is in the American Museum of Natural History. It weighs 536 carats. The main deposits are in Asia, Australia, Brazil and Madagascar.

Sapphire symbolises immortality, purity, wisdom, truth, patience and commitment.

The Diamond

To determine the precise value of this precious material quoted on the stock exchange, experts rely on four essential criteria, commonly known as the "4Cs" for,
"cut": i.e. its size, shape,
"carat": i.e. its weight and therefore its volume,
"colour": for its hue and
"clarity": for its purity through the presence or absence of micro-inclusions

The largest diamond, weighing 545.67 carats, belongs to the King of Thailand. It is called the Golden Jubilee.
