Ruby is the gem of the month for July

An ancient tradition

For many of us, the ruby is undeniably one of the most emblematic stones in the world of jewelry. It is one of the four gems generally considered precious, alongside diamonds, sapphires and emeralds.

It was first mined in Sri Lanka in the 8th century BC. Throughout history, the ruby has been surrounded by legends and beliefs, symbolizing desire, passion and power, as well as being recognized for its spiritual and medicinal virtues.

It was long considered the most precious of stones. Its first name was Ratnaraj, meaning Queen of Precious Stones in Sanskrit.

Today, the main ruby producers are Mozambique, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Burma, although Burmese mines are increasingly rare.

The most expensive ruby ever sold was a 25.59-carat Burmese "pigeon's blood" ruby, which sold for $30 million in 2015.

A symbol of love and well-being, rubies are often chosen for engagements and wedding anniversaries, particularly the 15th and 35th.
